When sutters mill was in operation he had a group of mormons working for him when their contract was finished they wwent downstream and mined a large inside bend gravel bar.It became known as mormon bar they did well with it and departed to Salt lake,Utah following the joshua tree,s and setteld the rest is history.The mormons keep acute records I would try archives in salt lake city.May be no connection but very interesting good luck!
