Using a Gold Pan is good to go into areas to see if in fact there is gold there to warrant futher prospecting. If the gold you found was rough and had quartz still on it yes that would mean the it was coming from somewhere real close up stream. The gold pan is also useful in panning for gold in creeks looking for deposits. Also for working out the concentrates left in a sluice or dredging clean up.
