Most of the "nuggets" of any size are burried deep in the riverbed, some say 20 feet down to bedrock. Everything above ground has been sifted through for the last 150 years. The ground around the river is highly "mineralized" making it difficult for metal detectors to get accurate readings. If you want gold from the San Gabriel river you're gonna have to work for it. Sift gravel.
